Volvo XC90 Towing Review

There is a new generation of lighter and more fuel-efficient all-wheel drive vehicles, and the Volvo XC90 is one of the best of them. And what makes it even better is that it is also a very capable tow vehicle.

At the legal limit, we found the XC90 to be stable and safe, but as we pushed forward to 110 km/h, there was some more movement.

In the lane change test, the XC90 took the first two runs, but couldn't control the caravan on the third and fastest attempt, which picked up one of the cones marking the maneuver.



The hill start was more to the liking of the XC90. With a torque of 354 lb ft, the XC90's 2.0-litre engine has less power than some of the larger 4x4 vehicles tested, but it proved to be sufficient to easily pull up a 1-in-6 gradient.

Compared to the six-cylinder engines of most competitors, the XC90's four-cylinder engine doesn't sound as refined and smooth. However, it delivers exceptional fuel economy and emission values for a large 4x4, achieving 49.6 mpg and emitting 149 g/km of carbon dioxide.

Inside, the XC90 is beautifully crafted with a clean, clear, and thoroughly modern design, with the dashboard dominated by a giant touch screen.

It's practical and looks good, with real space for seven instead of a cramped third row of seats. With five upright seats, our practical testers found room for a full load of holiday luggage, and the handy reversing camera and trailer stability control equipment scored more points.
