Author: Gary WhiteThe Landcruiser off-road vehicle has been in production for well over half a century, and to this day it has lost nothing of its basic form as a vehicle for serious off-road use – although it now also offers the comfort of a modern SUV. Toyota prides itself on having the world's best-selling SUV in its portfolio, the Land Cruiser.
When the Land Cruiser was born in 1951, the model did not yet have its current name. After a prototype of the off-road vehicle had been constructed a year earlier, the first BJ 40 type went into service with the Japanese authorities – with a diesel engine with a displacement of 3.4 liters, six cylinders and 85 SAE hp. The first edition rode leaf springs and live axles, and only 298 units were made to order.
Depending on the wheelbase, the current model (J15) is 4.51 meters to 4.78 meters long and can take up to 1934 liters of luggage on board. The three-door has a regular capacity of 381 liters and the five-door 621 liters. If the car is configured as a seven-seater, only 104 liters remain behind the third row of seats. Toyota does not offer petrol engines at all in Germany, while both R4 and V6 engines are on sale in other markets. The only unit in this country is a four-cylinder diesel that pulls out 177 hp from a displacement of 2.8 liters. The drive can be coupled to the regular 6-speed manual switch or an automatic with just as many stages. According to the standard, the diesel consumes 7.2 liters of fuel, emits 190 grams of CO2 per kilometer, accelerates the car to 100 km/h in 12.1 seconds and ensures a top speed of 175 km/h.

The first car at the North Pole
In 2001, Toyota celebrated the Land Cruiser's 50th birthday with a special model with automatic air conditioning, roof rails, full leather interior and polished alloy wheels - further indications that the off-roader had long since outgrown its traditional field of activity.
Nevertheless, the Japanese car remained true to itself with its new edition, shown at the 2002 Paris Motor Show. The new vehicle hadn't lost any of its off-road characteristics, and Toyota had improved its driving characteristics for the road again. When it came to interior comfort, the manufacturer now spoke of a "level of premium sedans". At the same time, the J9, although heavily upgraded, was one of the first vehicles to reach the North Pole alongside the Toyota Hilux.
But the production version also meant a significant further development. For the first time, it offered a height-adjustable chassis with variable dampers. Toyota scaled new heights when it came to engine performance: a newly developed V8 petrol engine with a displacement of 4.6 liters produced 235 hp, and the manufacturer brought the “most powerful diesel engine on the German off-road vehicle market” – 204 hp and 430 Newton meters.
