Author: Gary WhiteThe 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is one of the finest tow cars on the market. It comes from Mitsubishi's top equipment line and has all-wheel drive as standard. The 150 hp diesel can pull up to 2 tonne but the equally powerful two-liter petrol engine has a lower limit of 1,600 kilograms.
By their own account, Mitsubishi has reduced the noise, vibration and improved the suspension in the facelift model. In everyday life, the Outlander with the third row of seats sunk into the boot is spacious. The chassis copes with loading plus trailer operation without and problems and handles rocky hills with ease. The physical driving stability is good overall, but the Outlander still has no trailer ESP - which a lot of its rival tow cars does. In addition, the rear parking warning system does not switch off when the trailer electronics are plugged in which can be a little frustrating.
The range of engines in the Mitsubishi Outlander is excellent. You can choose between the 2.0 MIVEC petrol engine and the 2.2 Di D common rail diesel. Both engines have four cylinders and produce 150 hp each. The petrol engine is available either with front-wheel drive and a 5-speed or 6-Speed Manual transmission or with all-wheel drive and an automatic transmission. Both front-wheel and all-wheel drive are available for the diesel. Both versions are optionally equipped with a 6-Speed Manual or automatic transmission. The 2.2-litre diesel with a manual transmission achieves the best consumption values with standard values between 5.1 and 5.3 litres. In practice, consumption is around six liters. With the best emission values of 134 g/km CO2, this version is the only one in the good efficiency class A.
The plug-in hybrid version, which has been driving the Outlander since spring 2014 with a 121 hp petrol engine and an electric motor on the front and rear axles, achieves significantly better values. The hybrid version, weighing just under two tons, accelerates to 100 km/h in eleven seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 170 km/h. Purely electrically, this Outlander has a range of 52 kilometers. The test consumption is around four litres plus electricity.
