Hyundai Ioniq 5 Towing Capacity & Weight

Like the Polestar 2, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is in the middle when it comes to trailer load: the South Korean electric vehicle pulls up to 1,600 kilograms and you will also find a large storage space in it. Warning: only the more powerful Ioniq 5 with a battery capacity of 72.6 kWh can pull this load. The Ioniq 5 with 58 kWh only pulls 750 kilograms and is therefore not suitable for heavy caravans.

The IONIQ 5 is an eye-catcher even for hardened car fans. The angular Korean car gets more looks and curious questions than a Porsche Taycan or Audi e-tron. This is due to its unusual design. Its proportions are reminiscent of a compact car, but the dimensions of the IONIQ 5 with a length of 4.6 meters and a width of 1.90 meters and a height of 1.60 meters are more like a compact SUV like the VW Tiguan.

In the key discipline of range, the IONIQ 5 makes its biggest blunder. On the freeway at a GPS-calibrated speed of 130, the IONIQ 5 consumes around 30 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers. This means that the IONIQ 5 only has a range of around 260 kilometers on the motorway in practice. The high highway consumption of the IONIQ 5 is mainly due to its size and poor aerodynamics. Consumption on country roads falls to around 22 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers. In the city, consumption of less than 20 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers can be achieved.

The practical consumption of the IONIQ is disappointing. Streamlined cars such as the Tesla Model 3 or the original IONIQ are significantly more efficient with highway consumption of around 20 kWh per 100 kilometers.

How Much Can a Hyundai Ioniq 5 Tow?

There are two different towing capacity ratings for the Hyundai IONIQ 5. The maximum you can tow is 1600kg with either the Long Range models with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive version. However the standard range version with rear-wheel drive (SR RWD) has a maximim towing capacity of 750kg.

A Bigger Battery For Towing

Previously the Ioniq 5 was available in the UK and Europe with two battery pack options - a 58kWh option and a 72.6kWh unit. On the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5, the latter has been replaced with a larger 77.4 kWh battery. Hyundai hasn't shared the range numbers of the larger battery, but it's safe to say the range will exceed 300 miles (483 km). The smaller 72.6 kWh battery has a manufacturer-specified range of 298 miles (481 km). In addition, there is a battery conditioning feature that optimizes battery temperature for improved charging performance. This feature is particularly useful in colder climates where batteries lose range and guarantees better charging performance, according to Hyundai. Drivers enter a charging point on the maps and the system automatically sets the optimal battery temperature when they arrive at the charging station.

Hyundai has upgraded the Ioniq 5 for the 2023 model year in the European market. The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 is essentially the same as the MY 2022 car, but with some key upgrades that add to its appeal. Here are five things we know about the 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5.
