Author: Gary WhiteThe best tow car of 2022 has finally been revealed by The Caravan and Motorhome Club. This year it will be the 39th time the competition has run and its been one of the closest years ever.
The winner this year was the SEAT Leon Estate FR 1.5TSI 150PS which took home the grand prize and came out on top against a very competitive field in the Best Car To Tow A Caravan with a weight of 1100 – 1200kg category. The SEAT wowed the judges who commeneted saying "Lively performance from a willing petrol engine with plenty of pulling power while remaining composed at speed."
While we eagerly await the results of the Tow Car 2022 award we take a look at which cars are likely to be the best towing cars in 2022 and rate the chances of some of this years winners taking the crown. Last year it was the SKODA Superb Estate SE L Executive 2.0 TDI 150PS DSG which won the trophy and was a clear winner in the 1300kg - 1400kg caravan towing category making it the 38th winner of the Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year competition.
The SKODA Superb Estate is a front wheel drive, 5-door Estate car with auto retractable towbar which is a really nice feature. Due to the 2.0L TDI engine it can comfortably pull a 1382kg caravan. Now, if I was a betting man I would back the 2022 model of this car to take the prize for the second year running. Due to Covid-19 and other supply issues, many car manufacturers had to scale back product development so there are actually 15% fewer new car models this year. Another contributing factor to this is the uptake in electric cars which we know do not make very good cars for towing. As manufacturers diversify their range of electric and hybrid models there are fewer contenders to be the best towing car of 2022.
If you are looking for the best towing car in 2022 that is going to pull a larger load then the Volvo Recharge Plug-in Hybrids are a great car and could easily pickup the 2022 Towcar of the Year Award. The Volvo XC40 and V60 are solid towing vehicles being able to pull up to 1700kg and 2000kg respectively.
In last years Tow Car award the XC40 was described by one judge as "pulls like a train" and the V60 as having "One of the best combinations of astonishing power delivery, practicality, and a fair price tag", some really reassuring words.
Time will tell which car will be crowned the best towing car 2022, but its expected to be a close contest anyway.
We anticipate the best towing car of 2022 to be a closely contested competiton, whilst there is not an abundance of new cars on the market, some refinements to the VW and Kia models have brought their cars up to a much higher spec to rival this years winners.
